Last rites for Stan?

Steve Staunton's future as Ireland manager looks even more uncertain today after the national side put in a dismal performance in a 1-1 draw at home to Cyprus. Even though hopes of qualification for Euro 2008 were already gone, Staunton got something of a reprieve on Saturday with a reasonable draw against Germany. However on Wednesday his blushes were only saved by Steve Finnan's last-minute equaliser, against a Cyprus side that had beaten Ireland 5-2 in their previous fixture, one of Ireland's worst-ever international results.

It was sad to hear Irish fans jeering his name on Saturday, and it's probably best for all concerned to draw a close to his tenure. We should still remember the great service he gave to Ireland as a player.
