Setanta feels the heat

England fans have been at it again. Not content with booing their own team on a regular basis, they were aiming abuse at the Setanta Sports channel during the recent match against Andorra. Their original gripe was that Setanta would not sell highlights of England's away matches to the BBC or ITV at a knockdown price - however this was the trigger for the anti-Irish elements within their support to strike up with old refrains such as "No Surrender to the IRA", a somewhat bizarre reference to Setanta's Irish origins (see the story in the Daily Telegraph).

Setanta is a godsend to Irish viewers in Britain, providing extensive live coverage of Gaelic games which is available in most Irish pubs and clubs. However they do not actively promote GAA coverage over here (unlike their promotion of Aussie Rules) - and given the reaction of England's fans on Saturday, perhaps it's now apparent why that is. Reports suggest that Setanta may be in financial difficulty if they do not add subscribers at a much increased rate over the forthcoming season, because of their massive investment in England matches. How sad if we were to lose live GAA coverage because of it.
